 An Autumn Breeze

Autumn. There was nothing like it except...well...autumn. Particularly Ralin's favorite time of year. Except for spring. But there was something about the air, the slant of the sun's light, the crisp air that nibbled at his cheeks and hands. The smell of burnished leaves on the trees and ground, and was that a hint of nutmeg and pumpkin on the breeze?

It was Hogsmeade weekend, and Ralin was one of the first students through the gates and onto the path towards the wee village.

Garlands of orange berries and dried woven sprigs of bittersweet and straw decorated the houses, with jack-o-lanterns of all shapes and sizes (and grins) occupying porches and walkways. Everywhere there were dabs of enchantments, such as the bats hanging from the eaves of the Post Office, and the muggle-inspired 'ghosts' looming over the Three Broomsticks' garden. Even the bookstore had bewitched jack-o-lanterns floating around it, like some strange asteroids caught in orbit around the building.

Ralin hummed a ditty to himself, feeling a spring in his steps. It was autumn! And Hallows Eve was just around the bend. He was already planning his costume but-

WHAM

"Yowch, watchit!" He toppled forward, just catching himself as something hit his back. Spinning around with the reflexes of a Chaser, he barely managed to catch the jack-o-lantern as it attempted to ram him again. Clearly a spell gone awry. The carved pumpkin struggled in his hands, and then broke free.

"Ohhhhh bats!" Ralin ducked as it dove at him again. "Who's th' owner of this thing?! Gerroff me!" He tried to grab it again, but this time held on gamely. Clearly the pumpkin had aspirations of freedom, because it then proceeded to drag him through the next-door neighbor's hedge and into the garden.

Briefly a thought flew through his head why do spells go bonkers when I'm around??? but lost air and fell to the bottom of his mind just as he plowed through a patch of carrots. He should let go, but then it would just ram him again. And so, without any clue as to how to fix this particular broken spell, he just did what he could think of....and that was to keep holding on.

"Yeeehaw!"
