Night Shopping [ open ] « Thread Started on Aug 21, 2009, 1:28pm »
It was shopping day for Ranna. Well, nighttime shopping at least. During the day, Ranna made an appearance in Diagon Alley, where she had to grit her teeth and endure the bustling, pushing crowd in the narrow, painfully cheerful alley.
Ah but night...night was when she truly made an appearance. Brushing the hem of her dark red dress and adjusting her cloak, Ranna moved to her cabinet. Which mask today? An ornate one, with narrowed eyes and dark filgiree. Donning the mask, Ranna shed her disguise and became, once again, Mosrael.
A smile cut its way along her pale face. There was much to be done this night.
Knockturn Alley came alive at night, but even at this time, the witching hour, it was fairly deserted. Mosrael moved with the shadows, danced with their flicker and shade, so that her progress along the alley was partially hidden. Borgin & Burks, the sign read. Well, time to see what was being offered here.
The bell rang mournfully as Mosrael entered the shop. She looked around, just as a greasy haired old man approached her.
"Ah, miss, how can I help you?"
The mask turned his way, her voice rasped out. "I am new to this area, and I seek...an item. Perhaps you have heard of it? Carved from onyx, it looks like a human eye?"
"Ah, hmmm, mmm, maybe," he hemmed and hawed, thinking hard. "Let me check," and he scuttled away to the depths of the shop.

WHUMP.
Scar McGowan looked around warily through her long dark bangs, bending down awkwardly to pick up the ancient book she'd just dropped roughly on the floor.
"It had that crack on the spine before I did that," she mumbled to herself as she replaced the heavy book on the shelf. Not that it would matter; Scarlet had made herself--both of herselves--known to the workers of Borgin & Burke's over the last few months, and now for the most part they didn't bother her until she was ready to check out. Today she was sifting through ancient alchemy grimoires, the very tediousness of the subject making all the books on the subject rather large.
She shot a venomous look at the shopkeeper as he passed by; Sid was working today. That pompous fool was her least favorite of the B&B workers. Her black gaze lingered on the woman he was helping. She wore exquisite finery for someone wandering Knockturn Alley at night, where usually dressing in such ways would get you instantly under attack by thieves and muggers. She examined the beautiful mask upon the woman's face for a moment longer, and longer, until she realized she was staring. Her black eyes darted back to her books, brushing the dust off another cover as she browsed. Scar's curiosity was sparked by the woman, but no so much so that it distracted her from her books.

WHUMP
As Mosrael waited, her attention was drawn to the sound of a book hitting the floor. So she wasn't alone in the shop. Or was it another bookkeeper? Drifting, dancing closer with slow quiet steps, Mosrael made her way into the back of the shop, where another woman was found staring at her. Her eyes darted back to her books, but Mosrael's interest was heightened. Perhaps a little stimulation would let her know what manner of woman this was. After all....Mosrael was recruiting.
"Where is that storekeeper?" she said tartly. "Do you work here? This business runs slower than a baswolth slug. If you do work here, you'd best go fetch him!"

"I don't work here," Scar replied simply, not looking up from the book in her hand. It was an automatic reply, one Scarlet usually employed to satisfy someone until they left her alone. Realizing what she was doing, Scar looked up through her bangs at the woman in front of her. It was the masked woman. She'd noticed her staring.
"I'm sorry," Scar muttered, her eyes downcast once more towards her book. She gestured towards where the woman had been standing earlier, "about the staring...before." She was about to turn back to her books and leave the woman when a hand slapped down on the hardcover in her hands. Scarlet scowled. Sid.
"I'm sorry, miss, is this woman bothing you?" Sid asked politely towards the masked woman, with an undertone of malice towards Scarlet. "She comes in here every other night and she never buys anything..."
Scarlet wrenched the book away from him, giving the man a poisonous look. Her black eyes darted towards the masked woman for a moment, then back towards the book. Not now not now, she told herself, but any more pushing from Sid and she would snap.
ooc: Sorry, Scarlet is super-awkward conversational 'light-mode' rp. Make her mad and she's more fun. lol

"It's not this woman who is bothering me," Mosrael rasped as she turned her intricately masked face towards him. "I hope you do not treat every customer in such a way?" Her cold tone warmed slightly, as if she was humoring him with a smile. "Now, did you find what I am looking for?"
One pale hand rose to forestall the other woman's apology. Yes, she had been staring. Sometimes Mosrael wanted to draw attention. Her masks fit each occasion with whichever mood she was in, and whatever business she had planned. Tonight, a little stir in Knockturn Alley would hopefully draw curiosity like rats to a fallen trashpail, and that was what she wanted. Information did not come from thin air, and lackeys were few in attendance thus far.
"Sometimes masks hide hideous scars. Sometimes they hide secrets." The warmth grew in her voice. Yes, she was smiling. "But those faces that are masks of themselves are truly the enigma." Her odd words echoed inside her mask. "Do you come every night to this shop looking for something?"

"It's not this woman who is bothering me," A defiant smirk grew across Scarlet's face at the tone of the masked woman.
The woman proceeded to discuss what she was looking for with the shopkeeper, but Scarlet blocked them out. She tended to her books, straying towards the shelves once more, but not too far away so she couldn't hear or be excluded from the masked woman's conversation. Something about this woman made Scarlet think positively of her. Not liking particularly, but most definitely interested. Both sides of Scarlet were interested.
The presence of the woman finally strayed Scarlet's attention from her books, and her eyes wandered towards the mask once more. It was even more detailed, even more beautiful up close.
"Sometimes masks hide hideous scars. Sometimes they hide secrets." Scarlet's brown eyes shifted to the eyes behind the mask, suddenly wondering whom she was speaking to. "But those faces that are masks of themselves are truly the enigma." Scarlet arched a brow, confused by the woman's statement. Was this woman speaking of herself, or of Scarlet? Her words rang heavily in the young witch's head.
"Do you come every night to this shop looking for something?"
"Mostly," She replied immediately, somewhat surprised by her own quick reply. Why was she answering this woman? She shook her head, both at her manner of answering and the answer itself. "I'm looking for something, I'm just not sure what..."

"Searching?" Mosrael's voice was an odd contrast to her unmoving face. Strange inflections, as though from a mask that had begun to learn how to talk. Sometimes wooden, other times rasping and low, and then in one movement it could become silky smooth.
"We are alike, you and I." The shopkeeper was dismissed, by one step of Mosrael, turned slightly, moving him out of the circle, out of the conversation. For a moment he hung there, uncertain as to what had happened.
"I am searching for something. For information. And for clues, for what is the state of this place since the Dark Lord's downfall? I hear whispered rumors from rats and shadows of a Dark Laird, but the Death Eaters that wander are aimless, adrift."
One gloved hand was extended. In it was a bottle of black ink. "My calling card. I should like to see if our hunting is not akin. Pour this into the air, and where I am, we can talk."

"We are alike, you and I."
"You know nothing about what I am like," Scarlet replied in her same matter-of-fact monotone, her eyes downcast against the questioning disapproving look of the shopkeeper as the masked woman pushed him away.
"I am searching for something. For information. And for clues, for what is the state of this place since the Dark Lord's downfall? I hear whispered rumors from rats and shadows of a Dark Laird, but the Death Eaters that wander are aimless, adrift."
The black-eyed woman arched a brow. "Dark Laird? I know nothing of a new lord of the dark wizards, none that I know of have stepped up since the downfall of the true lord," perhaps that was what Scarlet was looking for, waiting for. Maybe she was waiting for her chance, her turn to prove to the new chosen one what she was worth. To show the world that Scarlet McGowan wasn't a witch to be trifled with.
"My calling card. I should like to see if our hunting is not akin. Pour this into the air, and where I am, we can talk." Scarlet took the card, her eyes searching it over before it disappeared up her baggy sleeve.
"You may ask for Mosrael."
Scarlet could tell she was going to like this woman.
