The evening sun hung low in an autumn sky, glowing orange as a ripe pumpkin and tinting the spires and roofs of Hogwarts with Halloween light. Carriages drawn by thestrals rumbled along the road to the main doors of the school, carrying adults from all reaches of the wizarding world.
It was All Hallows Eve, and Hogwarts was hosting the greatest event of the semester.
From her tower, Siara Brightweather watched as the first arrivals were greeted by house elves in a myriad of costumes and escorted inside. The staff of Hogwarts had outdone themselves this year. The outside of Hogwarts was draped in cobwebs, enchanted clouds of bats flew around snagging bugs out of the air and orange faerie lights glimmered along eaves and around windows.
Putting the final touches on her own costume, she left her quarters and made her way downstairs.
"Headmistress, we've lit the pumpkins and the guests are arriving!" Professor Zigway greeted her as she entered the Great Hall from the staff entrance, wearing his own costume of a classic muggle vampire.
Siara grinned, feeling like a schoolgirl again. This was her favorite holiday! "Excellent! Love the costume, Professor!"
The Headmistress was wearing a black and white pinstriped suit which accented her tall, lean frame. With a spider bowtie and a collar that fanned out around her shoulders like a spiderweb, she looked like a certain muggle character. To complete the outfit, her face was painted white, with a skeleton's grin painted across her mouth and up her cheeks. Black paint around her eyes, and her silver hair died white and spiked in a spray around her head, as well as her hands painted like white bones. Feeling very much a part of the decor, she strode into the Great Hall.
It was like walking into a haunted forest. Tall trees stretched to the ceiling like colonnades, their skeletal fingers draped with cobwebs and enchanted candles. Orange and black faerie lights floated everywhere, and massive grinning jack-o-lanterns were scattered around the room. One section was filled with small round tables and a snack table. The rest was reserved for the dance floor. Black candles and small jack-o-lanterns floated overhead, owls swooped over everyone's heads, and flocks of bats made their appearance around the rafters.
In one corner the Weird Sisters were playing a Halloween dirge that set her foot to tapping. Five more minutes, and the ball would start!

Ranna Eriadthwen loved costume occasions. It was a pity her collection of masks remained at home. It wouldn't do for the upstanding Ministry woman to be seen wearing the 'faces' of her more shadowy self. But her costume was extravagant, and that was how Ranna liked to appear in public. Her simpering, pretty-girl facade at the Ministry was fun on occasion, but she preferred a more...interesting appearance for her true self.
Black and violet robes swirled around her slim frame, the edges tattered in long points. Carved black horns sprouted from her forehead and curved back and up. The robes draped from her arms to the ground, so when she lifted them, it looked as though she had wings. A tall stiff collar framed her white throat, and in one hand she held a simple iron staff capped with a glowing green orb.
She had seen this character in a muggle picture before. Maleficent, she was called. Ranna had instantly taken a liking to this muggle villain, and today she looked every inch the part.
A house elf wearing a pumpkin bowed, beckoned to the door. Ranna stepped past without looking down at it.
Into the Great Hall, into an enchanted, eerie forest. She found herself relaxing. This atmosphere was perfect. Ah, there was the 'mighty' Headmistress herself, dressed like some odd type of skeleton. Ranna swept over to her.
"Headmistress, it's a pleasure to meet you," she smiled, inclining her head. "I'm Ranna Eriadthwenn, from the Ministry."

Halloween was certainly her favorite holiday, Nuriko mused as she checked on the animals for the last time. Certain that they were happy and secure, she snapped a padlock on Gateway’s cage and turned out the lights. Locking the door and tapping it and the three jack-o’-lanterns on her porch with her wand, she set the barrier and alarm spells in motion. She had already done the stables. It was a sad fact, some people held that Halloween meant they had to play cruel pranks, and she didn’t want to take the chance.
Looking up at the sky, she saw that it was a clear, cool night with little breeze. Perfect for flying. She straddled her Nimbus, adjusting her long skirt before kicking off. Rising smoothly into the air, she headed straight for the castle, which was lighting up the night. Wind whipped through the short hair of the quidditch-crazed shopkeeper, and she grinned, she’d done little broom flying since her graduation. Arriving at the castle, she descended and stepped off her broom, pulling her skirt down. She paused a moment to check her brightly colored and feathered red and blue spikes before surrendering her broom to a pumpkin-wearing house elf and following her inside. Once in the entrance hall, she left her guide with thanks and entered the Great Hall.
Stopping just inside, Nuriko looked about with a grin. The decorations this year were spookily awesome! Her foot tapped and she swayed a little in time to the tune as brightly colored wings sprouted from her bare shoulder blades. With her flowing skirted red dress, bright hair and wings, she now assembled nothing more or less than a vivid red and blue parrot. Her wing’s growth stopped as the song ended, and she headed off with a joyful skip for the pumpkin juice and cookies.

"Pumpkin joooose!" A merry voice sang as Nuriko approached the table of snacks. Several bewitched cookies sailed up and around her head.
"Watch those treats lassie, they're tricky. I helped th' house elves with some o' them." The grinning face of one Ralin O'Faerlun hove into view on the other side of the table. Except tonight his freckled face was painted bright orange. He was wearing a scarecrow's outfit, with straw poking out from his sleeves and hems. With a wink to Nuriko, he reached up and plopped a large jack-o-lantern onto his head. It was a jack-lantern mask, actually, enchanted so that the wickedly grinning visage glowed with orange light, and his face beneath it was invisible under the orange light.
"Boogah boggah!" The fifth year cackled and held up a piece of pie. "Good t'see ye lass, I'm glad ye came!" His voice had an odd echo to it.
"You look lovely t'day, nice wings, but do they shed on the furniture?"

"Miss Eriadthwenn, it's a pleasure to meet you. Which department are you from?" Siara's golden eyes took in Ranna's costume. Very dramatic, and for some reason it seemed to fit the shorter woman well. She did not recognize the name, and made it one of her duties to be familiar with the Ministry. Both for political reasons...and for reasons of the Order's concerns.
"Is it your first time to a Hogwarts Ball? I would suggest the pumpkin snacks, but be careful, I hear some of the house elves have bewitched a few." Siara heard a cackle and looked over her shoulder at the snack table. He was wearing a jack-o-lantern for a head, but she'd recognize that trouble-maker's laugh anywhere. Making certain that he was doing no harm save for offering Nuriko Elswyth a piece of pie, the Headmistress returned her attention to the ministry official.
The Wierd Sisters suddenly launched into a high-spirited rock song, and those who had already arrived began gravitating towards the dance floor like Quidditch players to a Firebolt. Siara found her own toe tapping to the beat, but suddenly an eerie feeling lanced through her. Hiding her surprise, she smiled at Ranna and excused herself. A quick circuit around the room would give her a better feel for the evening. Perhaps it was nothing, just the Hallows Eve atmosphere. But she knew that it would not hurt to be careful, in any case. Her hawk-eyes scanned the crowd as she wandered, looking for familiar Order faces.

“Ralin!” Nuriko said, waving cheerily across the table before snagging the cookies. “Mm, pumpkin chocolate chip!” She waved the cookie in the air before taking another bite. The parrot-woman poured herself and Ralin each some pumpkin juice. She drained hers, thirsty from growing the wings. “It’s nice to see you Ralin, wot’re you up to nowadays?”
"Boogah boggah!" The fifth year cackled and held up a piece of pie. "Good t'see ye lass, I'm glad ye came!" His voice had an odd echo to it. "You look lovely t'day, nice wings, but do they shed on the furniture?"
The shopkeeper laughed, reaching out to ruffle hair that wasn’t there. “Very scary, you are! How could I miss Halloween at the castle? And thanks, but no, they don’t shed. Oooh!” She darted around the table, grabbing Ralin’s wrist to drag him to the dance floor. “C’mon, lets dance! I love this song!”

Ralin laughed as Nuri suddenly grabbed his arms and propelled him onto the dance floor. "But wait lass, I can't dance! Three left feet y'know! Besides, I've got a pumpkin on me head!"
Despite his protests, Ralin had to admit he did like the song. Maybe if he shuffled his feet a little...
But the tune was too catchy to ignore, and soon he was bopping along to the music beside Nuri, then suddenly grabbed her hands and broke into a swift waltz (or some semblance of it). "Hahah, do ye have this song lassie? I haven't heard much o' th' Wierd Sisters, aside from what they play at our dances. Oops, sorry!" His ungainly pumpkin head had hit her forehead. "This is a grand ole costume, but I cannae see much out o' here!"

"GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" A harmonized cry of merriment and faux fear tore through the Great Hall entrance, providing a fitting accompaniment to the image that bore it. The screams came from house elves - 2 house elves - whom were at that very moment held like log bundles in the crook of two massive arms belonging to a wall of a man. The smiles on the elves' faces betrayed the wailing and in truth they were having great fun. So was the man, elated as he were to be back in his home away from home.
It wouldn't be so peculiar but the man was dressed in costume as Siara Brightweather. She was, after all, his hero.
"Liberate the Elves!" the man called out with great chivalry, before catching a floating cookie with his teeth and chewing mightily. Oh Goddess. His favourite. He'd remove the cookie to speak only his arms were full. "Pumpffkim Chofcolate CHipf! Wickef Awefsome."
Dashiell Fairborne arched his eyebrow mischievously and gently set down his charges on the enchanted amplifier of the event's esteemed musical guests. He patted the elves each upon the head and, feigning an impression of Siara, left them with some words of wisdom:
"Rock it. Rock it on." Dash winked, snatched two more cookies from the air - giving them to the elves - and worked his wardrobe back to the door. Here he whistled for (and received) his Nimbus 5005. She was a trusted beast.
It was at this moment that Dash spotted Nuri and Ralin. He wasn't sure what he adored more: seeing his dear friends dance together to one killer song or bearing witness to Ralin's impending disaster as he bashed around in a glowing pumpkin head.
With an inward chuckle, the Irishman nimbly mounted the broomstick and rode ceiling-ward.
Dash's quick scan of the room at first entrance revealed that Siara was not on the floor. He had a feeling of where she might be and opted to investigate. Not without mocking the infamous Siara Brightweather and her Quidditch excellence on the way.
"Where are you, Momma," he thought to himself.

The Headmistress in question had just completed a circuit of the room, wandering along the outskirts of the crowd and greeting familiar faces and visitors with a skeleton's smile and shaking hands. The odd feeling was gone now, replaced by a light-hearted mood that suddenly soared higher at the sound of delighted screaming at the other end of the room.
Wait a minute...was that...another Siara Brightweather? But....no, that crazy grin could only belong to one person, and the broom swooping out of nowhere to his hand was a dead giveaway. A Nimbus 5005, the hottest broom this side of Transylvania. She suddenly burst out laughing, earning odd looks from those around her.
Dash was one of the few people, aside from a certain redhead, who would even attempt to fly around the ceiling of the Great Hall, and he zoomed around with the clouds of bats in good imitation of Siara. She put her hands on her hips. He was mocking her! She couldn't help but grin.

It had been some time since October had attended a party such as this, not that she really had been invited to any what with her seeming to always be sulking. No one ever really approached her, but she just hoped that tonight would be different. Tonight she was going to dress up, go out, meet new people, and have as much fun as she possibly could in the hours remaining for the ball. She really had no idea what to go dressed as, but october knew she'd find something in that large clothset of her's. As she hunted through her wardrobe she picked out an adorable lolita styled sky blue dress with white trimming.
She wasn't too sure what anyone would think of her dressing up as a fairytale character, but it was her favorite out of them all and she really did look great in the dress. After tying a matching bow into her hair she put on a pair of black and white stripped knee high socks and shiny black pumps. Grabbing a white rabbit stuffed animal and her father's gold pocket watch from her jewlery box she was finally ready to go. The walk to where the party was to be held, really wasn't as far as she thought it would be and once she got there she stood amazed by all the beautiful decorations already set up. Though it seemed she wasn't too late since only a few students and adults had just arrived she walked deeper into the room and watched as the other's spoke.
October really wasn't one fo interupt others, and she wasn't going to go against that trait of her's either since she knew it was rather rude. She stood up against one of the walls, close to everyone, but far enough for other's to notice she wasn't apart of the group overall. She had only breifly met the Headmistress, and it seemed as though no one here's face was in the least bit familiar to her.

A loud pop was heard just outside the gates of Hogwarts and a figure dressed in a Bulgarian National Quidditch mascot costume appeared out of thin air. With a magical air about her, Emmi Douglas checked over her veela outfit and then headed up to the school for the Halloween bash. She hadn't been at all sure she would be able to make it but at the last moment things had worked out so here she was. Wondering who else might be in attendance, she smiled at a few vaguely familiar faces and then passed her cloak over to the ever present house elves that always seemed eager to take care of anything anyone might need.
"Miss Douglas!! It is so good to see you, my dear!" one female elf said as she beamed up at the young auror like a proud parent. "Its been far to long and here you promised Maisy to be writing!"
"I am truly sorry Maisy... Things have been so hectic but did you recieve those ear muffs I sent?"
When the little elf nodded and gave her another beaming smile, Emmi was glad she'd taken the time to send them. To often lately, she'd let her work consume her since she really had no reason not too and she suspected that it was worrying some people.
"They were wonderful, Miss Douglas." the elf squeeked out before shooing her forwards into the Great Hall. "Now.. off you go and enjoy yourself!"
Laughing Emmi nodded her head obediantly and then strolled into the Hall. The place looked AWESOME with all its decorations and lights. A feeling of being home enveloped her and for a moment she simply stood and soaked it all in before wandering through the crowd looking for someone familiar.

The music was pounding through the air, a fun, lively tune with guitars and drums and all that jazz. Ralin was having the time of his life (oblivious to the flying spiky-haired man above him in the rafters) jumping and dancing around with Nuri.
"Now lassie, do-si-doooo!" Ralin spun Nuri around and then followed suit (he had no clue how to do-si-do, it was just something he'd heard of on muggle television). Like a red-head top he flew out of the crowd of dancers, staggering into a silver-clad person.
"Whoops, sorry about...well hullo Emmi!" Taking in her costume, the cheeky lad suddenly put hand to his forehead, pretending to swoon. "Woah....yer presence is enchanting, o beautiful veela! Quick, where's some earplugs for me ears!" Realizing he was shouting in the direction of a fellow student - he thought he recalled her as being a Ravenclaw - Ralin grinned and flapped his hand in her direction.
"Don't mind me lassie," he boomed from under his jack-o-lantern head. "It's this pumpkin goin' to me head!"

Nuriko ignored Ralin’s protests, tapping lightly on his pumpkin head as they danced. “Well whose fault is that?” She said lightly. “No, I don’t have this song—ouch!” she rubbed her forehead, laughing. “That thing is a menace.” But she said it jokingly.
"Now lassie, do-si-doooo!"
Nuriko gasped for breath, she was laughing so hard at Ralin and his dancing. “Remind me to teach you how to square dance, dear.” Her voice took on more of the accent of her home country as Ralin spun away, out of control. About to help him, she saw he’d run into Emmi and instead leaned up against a wall. “Hey.” She said, out of breath, to the girl dressed as Alice in Wonderland.

Kokiah had watched as the students and professors stream into the Hall, all dressed in fancy costumes. She smiled when she saw the Head Mistresses outfit, but she laughed when she saw Ralin in his pumpkin. And Nuri with her wings was pretty cool. Kokiah was simply dressed in her usual, black cargo pants and a bright orange shirt, but she let her hair down for once and it was starting to annoy her. She was, unsuccessfully, trying to be her sister, Akari. She watched Nuri and Ralin on the dance floor a smothered a giggle. They would have better luck leading a blind, deaf, and mute granny. She left her little corner of the room and went out to grab a treat. But the tune was catchy and she ended up just standing by the table, brownie in hand tapping her foot to the beat.
